How I test
Every app reviewed or ranked here gets used on real songs before I write a word about it. Installing an app and clicking around isn’t a test.
What I do with each app
- Write at least one complete song in it, or as much of one as the app is built for.
- Use it the way it’s meant to be used: on the couch, in a session, or on the road.
- Try the free version first, then the paid tier if there is one, and note what the upgrade actually gets you.
- Export or share the result to see whether your work gets out cleanly.
What I score on
- Getting ideas down fast. How quickly you can go from a hummed melody or a line in your head to something saved.
- Finishing songs. Whether it helps you get past the first verse.
- Fair pricing. What’s free, what’s paywalled, and whether the subscription is worth it.
- Who it’s for. A great app for a producer can be the wrong app for a lyricist.
Keeping it current
Apps change. When an update moves an app up or down, I re-test it and change the date at the top of the review or guide.
